Many things i love in this movie, the build of character shirley and how the society see her the relation between shirley and rose and the evolution in this relation.
also love the long scenes and focus on characters face appear the changing in their feelings. Elisabeth moss 's performance is noticeable and inspiring the reincarnation of the personality and the excitement with the situations, I am pleased with all that she is doing, day after day, with increased experience and competence.
But the thing I blame for the movie is the poor dialogue and its use of the narrator's way in the story many times, Also the weak performance of some of the actors.
GRADE: B
THIS FILM IS RECOMMENDED.
IN BRIEF: Fine direction and excellent acting enhance a well-written film biography that avoids conventional storytelling and, unfortunately, some true facts as well.
JIM'S REVIEW: Shirley is far from a conventional biography. The film purposely avoids the standard trappings of this film genre and creates more of a psychological horror story that rarely stays within the fact-based life of this writer.
As one of the film's aptly states, Shirley has no friends." Despite being a revered and celebrated literary talent, Shirley Jackson, the subject of the movie and the author of the infamous short story, The Lottery, was an recluse who suffered from agoraphobia and writer's block, an angry alcoholic, and a self-proclaimed witch. Yes, Shirley is a very troubled woman filled with venomous hate for anyone who dares to approach her. She's a walking red flag.
One can easily understand why people would distance themselves from this cruel and spiteful woman. That is, except for a young couple, Fred and Rose Nemser, who come under her spell. They readily move in with Shirley and her dominating and philandering spouse, Stanley, a college professor and literary critic in a New England university circa the late 1940's. Fred, craving a tenured position at Bennington College and its world of academia, is to be Stanley's assistant and Rose, his pregnant wife, is ready for a change and a better life. That may all happen in due course, but it is this quartet of intriguing characters that make this independent film so memorable.
Josephine Decker solidly directs this psycho-drama and she stresses the sense of dread with her shrewd pacing that continually builds on the interplay of the characters' words and actions. She takes us into a male-dominated society where woman were secondary figures and exposes the constraints placed upon them. The director also focuses on the mental anguish that many women experienced in this period of time. She mixes some powerful images with an edgy sensuality, utilizing sound effects and music to ratchet up the tension. Her major misstep is in the retelling of the biographical details that are, at times, misleading. One wishes she would have just fictionalized the entire narrative and eliminated any references to Ms. Jackson's life story. This creative license is a tad too revisionist for its own good.
Still, there is much to admire in this innovative biography, even though some of these minor omissions stunt the film's impact. Sarah Gubbins' literate screenplay creates an insightful look into a very pre-MeTooMovement era with many vivid moments of sharp dialog and clever zingers, but the motives and actions of her well-written characters remain unclear and in need of more logical support. An interesting side-story about a missing girl mystery is introduced and successfully incorporated into the narrative, only to be discarded later in the film. As previously stated, too many liberties are taken with Ms. Jackson's life: her four children never appear or exist in this movie, her lesbian tendencies of which there is no real substantial evidence comes and go, her sadistic bouts of madness are borderline crazy.
However, where Ms. Gubbin outdoes herself as a screenwriter is in the dysfunctional relationship with Shirley and Stanley. The film excels in their sense of conflict due to some very fine writing and the great acting by Michael Stuhlbarg as Shirley's spiteful husband and Elisabeth Moss in the title role. Mr. Stuhlbarg makes his truly unlikeable character into an envious foil in the subtlest of ways. The actor is superb in his ability to hide Stanley's menacing tendencies and his character's ulterior motives. Ms. Moss, a physical doppelgänger to the actual authoress, is a revelation in her role as this madwoman. The actress shades her nuanced performance of a woman lost in her own dementia with a shocking vulnerability mixed with an urgent sense of brutality. Shirley's biting words become her only defense and Ms. Moss takes us into a woman on the verge of a breakdown. One hopes both actors are not overlooked during this award season.
In this film, these warring couple become a modern-day George and Martha ala Edward Albee's play in their uneasy get-togethers with their prey, the Nemsers. Many of their dinner scenes bristle with tension and vindictiveness. As these actors "get the guests" the film elevates itself to a higher level of notability and some wonderful theatrics.
As the unsuspecting counterparts, Odessa Young goes one-on-one with Ms. Moss shines as the impressionable Rose. Her metamorphosis from loyal wife to walking casualty is striking. Logan Lerman is strong as the ambitious Fred, although his is the least defined figure and could have used some more screen time to help clarify his character.
Shirley is not your run-of-the mill film biography. That is not the inventive Ms. Decker's intention. As a director, her disdain for the ordinary aligns with Ms. Jackson's way of thinking, even if the movie plays fast and loose with the facts. This is an innovative glance into the mind of a gifted and disturbed woman and it is one of the better movies of 2020, despite some aforementioned reservations. Definitely worthy of your time.
